What causes gout and how to treat it without harsh medications.

Although heredity may be a cause in the occurrence of gout, there are other causes that can lead to an increase of uric acid in the blood. They include:

  • Obesity, too much alcohol consumption, and irregular kidney function all increase the risk of getting gout.
  • Certain medications are known to cause uric levels to rise. They include insulin, low dose aspirin, and others.
  • Recent surgery.
  • Injury to the joint in question.
  • Increased blood pressure.
  • Low thyroid hormonal levels, commonly known as hypothyroidism.
  • Consuming foods with known levels of purines. Purines are the ingredients in food that are changed by the body into uric acid. Foods thought to raise uric acid include kidney and dried peas.

 Prevention

  • Consuming lots of fluid, at least six glasses a day, will help the body to remove more uric acid. Water also reduces the liklihood of getting kidney stones.
  • Keeping to a suitable weight, and doing regular exercise reduces the risk and severity of gout attacks.
  • Stay away from foods with high concentrations of purines.
  • Foods thought to decrease the occurrence of gout include: foods high in potassium and , blueberries.

Treatment

Treatments of gout can vary depending upon your overall health, age and medical history. The first step in treatment though is to remove the risk factors mentioned earlier. These include: ConsumingDrinking a lot of water, attaining suitable weight, exercising, keeping away from certain foods, and using appropriate treatments.

Most common gout treatments have adverse side effects, and because of that, many people choose to use natural treatments for gout. For example, the side effects of Prednisone include thinning of bones, lessoning of the ability to fight infections and, abdominal pain, among others.
