Ralph had just received his third "driving under the influence" arrest. He was going to represent himself in court, but his father, Sam, told him that this would be a huge mistake. When Ralph heard this, he asked Sam why he should even consider hiring a DUI lawyer.

Although Sam wasn’t a lawyer, he told his son that he learned the hard way when as a young man he received a DUI, represented himself in court, paid four thousand dollars in penalties and fines, and served 120 days in jail. As he mentioned to his son, after he got out of jail, he found out from a lawyer friend that had he hired a DUI attorney to represent him in court, he probably would have had his fines and penalties considerably reduced and he may have never served any time in the local city jail.

What a ”Drunk Driving" Lawyer Can Do in a Drunk Driving Arrest.

When Ralph heard this he knew he needed more DUI facts so he asked his father for more information about what a DWI lawyer can do in a "driving under the influence" arrest. His dad then stated the following: "If you have been charged with DUI you need a DUI lawyer who will aggressively represent your legal rights through the complexities involved in a DUI case. DUI lawyers will be able to assist you every step of the way through the criminal process and help you find the answers you need.”

When Ralph listend to his father explain this, it was as if his eyes were opened for the first time about the relevance of hiring a ”driving under the influence” lawyer. Stated more precisely, Ralph realized that he needed a DUI lawyer.

The Facts About Taking a Field Sobriety Test

He then told his dad that he had heard a lot about field sobriety tests. As a consequence, he asked his father what a field sobriety test was.

His dad responded with the following: “Ralph, field sobriety tests are administered by police officers to determine if a person has been operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, alcohol, or both. Field sobriety tests frequently consist of the 'walk and turn,' test, the 'one-leg stand,' test, the 'pen light' test, and other field sobriety tests. If you are arrested by the police for a suspected DUI, you should know that you are not legally required to take these field sobriety tests. In fact, many DUI attorneys believe field sobriety tests lack scientific merit and are invalid.”

Ralph’s father then wanted to highlight the following: "Ralph, unlike a chemical test such as a breathalyzer test, a blood alcohol test, or a saliva test, where refusal to take such a test can have far-reaching and negative consequences, an individual is not legally required to take any field sobriety tests. The bottom line reality is that police officers have typically made up their minds to arrest the individual when they administer one of more of the field sobriety tests. In a word, field sobriety tests provide additional evidence that the driver inevitably 'fails.' As a result, and in most instances, a polite refusal to take any field sobriety test may be appropriate”

Near the end of their conversation, Ralph said that was beginning to comprehend more about “drunk driving” laws and what DUI lawyers can do for a person who has received a DWI arrest, but he was still wondering why he was pulled over by the police in the first place. In his own words Ralph asked his father the following question: “Dad, why was I stopped by the police? Specifically what were they looking for”?

His father answered Ralph in the following manner: “Ralph, there are several diverse reasons why you could have been 'stopped' by a police officer. Some examples include the following: involvement in a traffic accident, expired registration tags, missing a front license plate, weaving in and out of traffic, speeding, tinted windows, and driving erratically. Not only this but someone could have also reported you to the police after seeing you leaving a sporting event, a party, a restaurant, or a bar 'under the influence' and getting behind the wheel of a vehicle. In a word, there are more than a few reasons why you were 'stopped' by a police officer.”

After getting “educated” about DUI arrests, the role of ”drunk driving" lawyers, and the fact that he didn’t have to agree to take any field sobriety tests at the time of his arrest, Ralph decided that he would without a doubt hire a ”drunk driving” attorney to represent him in court.

Ralph Gets Inspired That He Will Always Drink In Moderation and Never Go Through Another "Driving Under the Influence" Arrest

Something else, however, happened after he had talked to his father. Ralph finally started to realize the critical nature of "drunk driving" arrests and as a result, he arrived at a decision that from this point forward, he would always drink in moderation so that he would never again have to suffer through another DUI arrest.

His father smiled at Ralph and told him the following, “Ralph, it took me until I was forty years old to realize what you just told me. I am very proud of you.

This did wonders for his self esteem and so Ralph thanked his father and then said, "if I can always drink responsibly, I will never need to hire a DUI attorney again!"

Does Ralph Need Alcohol Rehabilitation For His Alcohol Abuse or For His Alcoholism?

There was, however, one thing that neither Ralph nor his father thought about, namely, if Ralph needs alcohol treatment for his alcohol abuse or for his alcoholism. In fact, Ralph may be required by the court to get rehab for his drinking problems.

Denny is a sixteen-year-old teenager who has eventually decided that he needs to go and see his doctor about his careless and excessive drinking. At first, Denny thought he would be able to basically go online, look for some fundamental alcohol info and determine whether or not he was dependent on alcohol.

Not unexpectedly, he found more than a few websites that spelled out some of the usual alcoholism symptoms. That’s the good news. The less than positive news, sorry to say, was that Denny displayed a host of these alcoholism symptoms.

Illustrations Alcohol Dependency Symptoms

As a case in point, Denny has been drinking much more than usual and he has started to have more heated squabbles with the young lady he is dating. What is more, for the first time in his life he has been encountering sleeping issues. In a similar manner, Denny time and again has felt depressed and on an increasing basis he has been manifesting poor concentration while at school. What is more, he has felt highly stressed and more uptight on a daily basis and for the past seven or eight months he has shown evidence of hazy thinking at school. Given that Denny has been demonstrating all of these symptoms, he was understandably nervous about his unhealthy and abusive drinking.

So Denny eventually made up his mind that he needed to call his physician and schedule an appointment. To tell the truth, this was problematic for Denny because his doctor was also his parents’ family healthcare practitioner. The source of his discomfort was this: at the risk of embarrassing his family, he had to go and disclose his careless and abusive drinking behavior to his healthcare professional.

When Denny arrived at the healthcare professional’s office, he frankly told the physician about the trepidation he has about his abusive drinking behavior. When the healthcare practitioner asked what was bringing about this consternation, Denny said that he had gone on the Internet and read about alcoholism and especially about alcohol addiction symptoms. He then listed all of the alcoholism symptoms that he plainly thought he has.

A Complete Physical Assessment and Outpatient Alcohol Rehabilitation

The healthcare professional informed Denny that it was wise of him to attend to his drinking difficulties, he gave Denny an in depth physical exam, and recommended that he talk to his Mom and Dad about registering in an out-patient alcohol rehabilitation program that was supervised by Doctor Myers, one of his doctor colleagues who is an alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction specialist.

What is more, when Denny expressed the fact that he has been feeling a sense of gloom to an increasing degree, the family healthcare practitioner notified Denny that depression and alcoholism often take place in the same person. Consequently, the healthcare practitioner also recommended that Denny talk to his parents about getting counseling to focus on his sense of gloom. In fact, Denny can go to the local mental health facility and make an appointment with Doctor Jefferson, a renowned clinical psychologist who specializes in treating youth.

The Significance of Handling Your Drinking Problems and Getting Motivated About Making Positive and Healthy Changes in Your Life

The doctor made it a point to notify Denny that he might not inevitably be dependent on alcohol, but that he was certainly drinking in an irresponsible manner. In other words, Denny was involving himself in teen alcohol abuse. The family doctor then informed Denny that the reason he suggested alcohol rehab in the first place was because he wanted him to face his drinking problems, make sure that he prevented them from getting worse, and start to live in a more healthy manner, even if it meant that he had to absolutely quit drinking.

In a nutshell, by successfully treating his problem drinking, Denny would be able to get his drinking difficulties under control and quit the negative sequence of events that could doubtless lead to alcoholism.

Denny undeniably did not look forward to facing his Mother and Father about his abusive drinking and his depression. And he definitely did not want to face the thought of enrolling in an alcohol treatment center. And lastly, he was not euphoric about going to a psychologist about his excessive sadness. Notwithstanding these anxieties, nevertheless, Denny in fact felt some psychological relief for the first time in quite a few months because at last he stopped making excuses for himself and decided to do something constructive about his drinking behavior.

How do you identify the fact that you have a problem with your drinking? When is it obvious that you are engaging in abusive drinking?

If you have hopelessly tried to discontinue your drinking or if you have given your word to yourself that your drinking days are behind you and then you recognized that you were drinking in an abusive manner just a few days later, chances are incredibly good that you have drinking problems. The key point is that if you have attempted to quit drinking and cannot complete the task, then your drinking is controlling you, instead of the other way around.

In a similar manner, if it takes increasingly more amounts of alcohol to get the same “high,” you probably need to realize that you have a drinking problem.

You may be telling yourself that the reasoning for your drinking is so that you can lower your nervousness or get rid of the hurt that you feel. In much the same way, you may be trying to avoid a hurtful circumstance and may be looking for something more beneficial, more helpful, or less mournful.

As you continue to drink, however, you will become aware that drinking does not bring about the same high and you will also comprehend that drinking doesn’t help eliminate whatever led to your problem in the first place.

As you continue to drink in a hazardous manner, unfortunately, you may become alcohol dependent and, as a result, you may add another major difficulty to cope with rather than uncovering more productive and wholesome ways of coping with your alcohol produced problems.

An Alcohol Evaluation is Probably Necessary

If you have concluded that you have a drinking problem, possibly the most beneficial thing you can do for yourself is to call your medical doctor or healthcare provider and schedule an appointment for a complete physical and for an assessment of your drinking behavior.

If you sincerely think that you have a dangerous drinking problem, it might be a good idea to get prepared to find out that you need to get alcohol reahbilitation.

At this point, what are your options? You can unquestionably say no and refuse to see your general practitioner and persevere with your pattern of hazardous drinking.

It definitely doesn’t take a mastermind, nonetheless, to realize that long-term, excessive drinking, if left untreated, will worsen over time and in all probability lead to an early death. Thus, your most beneficial alternative is to face up to your drinking problem and obtain the alcohol therapy you need.

The Pretense of the Functioning Alcohol Addicted Person

It is somewhat odd to note the fact that many people who are alcohol dependent lead busy and active lives and have houses, pets, families, vehicles, jobs, and any number of material possessions similar to individuals who are not addicted to alcohol.

Many of these “functional” alcohol addicted individuals may have never been apprehended for a DUI and may have been lucky enough to avoid all alcohol induced legal issues. In spite of this good fortune, on the other hand, these alcohol addicted people need to drink in order to function on a daily basis while maintaining their facade as they interact with people outside their family.

Ask anyone who has seen them when they are bingeing or in a drunken stupor or ask a family member about the problem drinker’s alcohol addiction, to the contrary, and they will be quick to affirm the authenticity of the drinker's situation and the particulars about the alcoholic’s drinking predicament and about his or her alcohol produced predicaments.

Why Do Alcohol Addicted Individuals Fail to Perceive Their Drinking Problems?

As alcoholism research and statistics on alcohol abuse have emphasized, no matter how observable the alcohol-related problems seem to those who interact with the alcohol dependent person, alcoholic individuals typically deny that drinking is the basis of their alcohol-related predicaments. Not only this, but alcohol addicted individuals regularly blame their alcohol induced problems on other people or upon other situations around them rather than seeing their part in the issue.

The source of the difficulty is that alcohol dependency is a disease of the brain. Once the drinker has become addicted to alcohol, he or she often resorts to denial, manipulation, and deceit as a way of dealing with the fact that his or her drinking is out of control. And to make the situation more problematic, the experience of alcohol withdrawal symptoms usually counteracts the alcohol addicted person’s rare attempts to abruptly stop drinking. As bleak as the alcohol addicted person’s way of life is, then again, the positive news is that quality help is usually obtainable – if the alcohol dependent person reaches out and gets alcohol rehab.

Conclusion

Conceding the fact that drinking is bringing about problems in your day by day functioning is perhaps the most straightforward way to determine if you have a problem with your drinking. Stated more precisely, if your drinking is leading to difficulties with your health, at work, in your relationships, with your finances, at school, or with the legal system, then you have a drinking problem that needs to be addressed.

If you have a problem with your drinking, furthermore, this means that you are engaging in irresponsible drinking.

While some individuals may be able to recognize their "alcohol signs," pinpoint their difficulties, and significantly diminish the quantity and rate of their drinking, other drinkers, nonetheless, need to address their drinking difficulties by getting professional alcoholism therapy. Furthermore, due to their penchant to deny the facts and bend the truth, alcohol dependent people absolutely require quality alcoholism rehabilitation for their hazardous drinking.

How do you know that you have a problem with your drinking? When is it evident that you are engaging in excessive drinking?

If you have unproductively tried to stop drinking or if you promised yourself that your drinking days are gone and then you were made aware that you were drinking in an excessive way just a few days later, chances are especially good that you have drinking problems. The bottom line is that if you have attempted to stop drinking and cannot accomplish this, then your drinking is controlling you, instead of the other way around.

In much the same way, if it takes increasingly more amounts of alcohol to get the same “high,” more likely than not you need to realize that you have a problem with your drinking.

You may be telling yourself that the reason for your drinking is so that you can lower your stress or get rid of the hurt that you feel. Similarly, you may be trying to steer clear of an injurious circumstance and may be looking for something better, more positive, or less sorrowful.

As you maintain your drinking, then again, you will become aware that drinking does not bring forth the same high and you will also understand that drinking doesn’t help do away with whatever triggered your sorrow in the first place.

As you continue to drink in an abusive manner, unfortunately, you may become alcohol dependent and, as a consequence, you may add another pivotal issue to manage rather than finding out about more productive and beneficial ways of coping with your alcohol induced difficulties.

The Necessity for an Alcohol Evaluation

If you have decided that you have a problem with your drinking, maybe the most beneficial thing you can do for yourself is to call your doctor or healthcare provider and arrange for an appointment for a complete physical and for an assessment of your drinking circumstances.

If you really feel that you have a serious problem with your drinking, it might be a good idea to get prepared to hear that you need to get alcohol reahbilitation.

At this point in your life, what are your choices? You can definitely decide against seeing your medical doctor and persist with your pattern of out-of-control drinking.

It really doesn’t take a nuclear physicist, on the other hand, to have a handle on the fact that continuous, excessive drinking, if left untreated, will degenerate over time and doubtless result an early death. For that reason, your most practical alternative is to face your drinking situation and get the alcohol rehabilitation you require.

The Charade of the Functioning Alcoholic

It is somewhat paradoxical to note the fact that multitudes of people who are alcohol dependent lead busy and active lives and have houses, pets, families, vehicles, jobs, and any number of material possessions similar to individuals who are not addicted to alcohol.

Many of these “functional” alcohol dependent individuals may have never been arrested for a DWI and may have been lucky enough to avoid all alcohol induced legal problems. Despite this fortunate situation, nevertheless, these alcohol dependent individuals need to drink in order to live on a daily basis while keeping up their facade as they interact with the outside world.

Ask anyone who has seen them when they are out on a drunken binge or in a drunken stupor or ask a family member about the problem drinker’s alcohol dependency, on the other hand, and they will be quick to affirm the authenticity of the drinker's situation and the whole story about the alcohol dependent individual’s drinking condition and about his or her alcohol generated problems.

Why Do Alcoholics Fail to Focus On Their Drinking Difficulties?

As alcoholism research and statistics on alcohol abuse have emphasized, no matter how obvious the alcohol induced difficulties seem to those who interact with the alcohol dependent person, alcohol addicted individuals frequently deny that drinking is the root of their alcohol induced predicaments. Not only this, but alcohol addicted people normally blame their alcohol induced predicaments on other people or upon other circumstances around them instead of seeing their part in the problem.

The root of the difficulty is that alcoholism is a disease of the brain. Once the problem drinker has become dependent on alcohol, he or she characteristically resorts to denial, manipulation, and lying as a way of coping with the fact that his or her drinking is out of control. And to make matters worse, the experience of alcohol withdrawal symptoms usually circumvents the alcohol addicted individual’s rare attempts to suddenly stop drinking. As miserable as the alcohol addicted person’s existence is, nonetheless, the encouraging news is that quality help is generally obtainable – if the alcohol dependent individual reaches out and gets alcoholism counseling.

Conclusion

Conceding the fact that drinking is producing difficulties in your day to day functioning is conceivably the easiest way to find out if you have a problem with your drinking. In other words, if your drinking is bringing about problems with your health, with your employment, in your relationships, with your finances, at school, or with the legal system, then you have a drinking problem that needs to be dealt with.

What's more, due to their tendency to deny the facts and bend the truth, alcohol addicted people undeniably need professional alcohol counseling for their excessive drinking.

What are the necessary factors in an effective alcohol intervention? Why do some alcohol interventions succeed as projected while others fail?

The Requirement for a Distinguished History of Intervention Achievement

Scientific inquiry demonstrates that an effective alcohol intervention needs to be carried out by an intervention professional who has a proven reputation of intervention attainment.

Fundamentally this means that instead of selecting a "typical" addiction therapist or psychologist for an alcohol addiction intervention, the person who is decided upon to conduct the intervention needs to be educated in alcohol dependency intervention methods and needs to have a reputation of fruitful alcoholism interventions.

A Few Key Examples of The Most Productive Time For an Alcohol Abuse Intervention

Scientific examination and alcoholism facts about interventions has also made obvious the fact that the most productive time for an alcoholism intervention is following a significant "happening" in the life of the alcohol dependent person or hazardous drinker. The following represents a few examples of these kinds of significant occasions:

The alcohol addicted individual or abusive drinker has been caught stealing something of importance.

The abusive drinker or alcohol addicted person has been caught lying about something of importance.

The alcohol dependent individual or alcohol abuser has been placed behind bars for a DUI or DWI.

In situations such as these, the alcohol addicted individual or abusive drinker is more apt to feel contrite or to be embarrassed, therefore making him or her more amenable to getting the professional alcohol counseling that is required.

At this time, additionally, it is also imperative to emphasize that the abusive drinker or alcohol addicted individual needs to be sober during the alcohol dependency intervention. Everything considered, if the abusive drinker or alcoholic is inebriated during an alcohol addiction intervention, failure is almost always a sure thing.

In much the same way, scientific study has also made evident the fact that the abusive drinker or alcohol dependent individual has to at least try to listen to what is articulated in an alcohol intervention. Stated more specifically, during an alcoholism intervention, the abusive drinker or alcohol-dependent person needs to listen to what his or her problem drinking has done to those who care for him or her the most.

The Critical Nature of Alcohol Treatment For the Careless Drinker

And finally, scientific study makes obvious the fact that the main reason for an alcohol addiction intervention in the first place is to entice the abusive drinker or alcohol addicted individual to get the quality alcoholism counseling that is required. Stated more exactly, even if the person who directs the intervention has a tremendous reputation of fruitful interventions and even if the abusive drinker or alcohol addicted individual openly listens to every word that is stated all through an intervention, if the hazardous drinker or alcohol addicted individual is not inspired to obtain professional alcohol abuse rehabilitation after the alcoholism intervention, then the intervention will be a disaster.

Evidently all of these factors are needed for an effective alcohol dependency intervention. If, to the contrary, the alcohol abuser or alcohol addicted individual is not stirred to seek alcohol abuse rehabilitation after listening to his or her family members state the agony, anger, and dissatisfaction they feel about the abusive drinker’s or alcohol dependent person’s thoughtless drinking behavior and the concern they feel for the problem drinker, then every other aspect of the alcohol intervention will more or less be meaningless.

Even Productive Alcohol Abuse Interventions Can Backfire In the Long Term

It also needs to be accentuated that notwithstanding the fact that the alcohol intervention can be identified as fruitful in that it helped put the hazardous drinker or alcohol addicted person in a more amenable framework and openly helped the alcohol addicted person or alcohol abuser make up his or her mind that he or she needed alcohol treatment or professional help for alcoholism or alcohol abuse, the sheer reality that the intervention took place might result in resentment, anger, and distrust in the long term.

To sum up, even when alcoholism interventions are seen as productive in the short term, in the long term, on the other hand, they may fail and, as a consequence, might make the family and/or the problem drinker's circumstance even poorer than it was before the alcohol intervention was undertaken.

No matter how unfair or paradoxical this seems, try to keep in mind that it is essentially one of the main alcohol facts that has to be faced when doing an alcohol intervention.

Jeffrey was a high school freshman who typically seemed to be living on the edge. Jeffrey had an adventurous personality and generally wanted to do what his older brothers were doing for fun. The essential drawback with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were as a result able from a legal point of view to operate a vehicle and to consume alcohol.

Jeffrey, conversely, had a rough time realizing the fact that as a fifteen-year-old teenager he should not be drinking. In fact, on the other hand, Jeffrey usually drank with his pals after school, predominantly on the weekends.

One weekend, Jeffrey was invited to drive around with some of his older buddies. One of his friends was old enough to purchase alcohol. After purchasing some wine coolers, wine, and beer, Jeffrey and all of his friends went to a park and drank for around three hours.

Jeffrey Experiences Alcohol Poisoning Symptoms

After drinking around ten alcoholic benerages, Jeffrey started to feel nauseous and then vomited. When he passed out on the football field, one of his pals called 911 for assistance. It was fortunate that the call for medical assistance was made because when his buddies went to the hospital to see Jeffrey, they were notified that Jeffrey had been exhibiting alcohol poisoning symptoms. Simply put, Jeffrey had overdosed on alcohol.

When Your Pals Drink Excessively

Jeffrey had heard that drinking in a hazardous manner can lead to an alcohol overdose but he never thought that this could affect him. After all, some of his friends frequently claimed that they could drink twenty four or more cans of beer in a day without suffering from any critical problems.

Armed with this information, Jeffrey was quite amazed to find out that he had overdosed on alcohol because he “only” had around ten alcoholic beverages. When he told this to the attending doctor at the hospital, however, the physicain told Jeffrey that drinking ten bottles of beer over a two or three hour period of time could in reality be substantially more alcohol than can be processed by the body. The healthcare professional further conveyed how excessive alcohol can cause the brain to shut down an individual’s respiratory system and that when this takes place, a person can cease to exist.

The First Sign of Abusive Drinking

This was the first forewarning to Jeffrey that he was drinking in an unsafe way and that there are costs for such deeds. The healthcare practitioner told Jeffrey that he was a fortunate young man because he almost perished from an alcohol overdose the night before.

The healthcare practitioner also spoke to Jeffrey’s parents and suggested that they get alcohol therapy for Jeffrey. His parents were thrilled that Jeffrey was safe and sound and informed the physicain that they would look into getting Jeffrey alcohol therapy.

While talking to his parents, Jeffrey notified them that there must be a good reason why he did not pass away and that he felt thankful that he was still alive. He also told his parents that the most ironic part about the entire drinking episode was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the previous six week grading period in health class at school.

When Paying Attention in Class Can Affect Your Life

At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Franklin, was teaching didn’t seem to make a lot of sense to Jeffrey. Due to the fact that he almost died, however, he felt that he should have listened more carefully in health class and applied what he had learned to his life.

Jeffrey informed his parents that he couldn’t wait to go to school and apologize to Mr. Franklin for not demonstrating more attention to a topic that was as relevant as learning about alcohol abuse and how to stay away from alcohol poisoning.

His parents smiled at Jeffrey and said that they were thrilled with the way he was taking responsibility for his risky drinking actions. All he had to do now was to let this near fatal experience influence his life in a productive way so that he would never again suffer from an alcohol overdose.

For more than a few years alcoholism research has demonstrated the fact that there is strong relationship between alcoholism and serious health conditions.

For instance, in 2005, scientific examination and alcohol abuse and alcoholism statistics showed that alcohol abuse and alcoholism cost the United States an estimated $220 billion on an annual basis. It can be stressed that this immense alcohol-related expenditure was significantly more than the cost linked with cancer ($196 billion) or with obesity ($133 billion). While it is appropriate to call attention to these facts, it is also important to point out that an interrelationship exists between all three of these health conditions.

To be more precise, chronic alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency are also highly associated with obesity and with cancer.

Definitely, substance abuse research has revealed that alcohol dependency can increase the risk for various forms of cancer, especially cancer of the kidneys, rectum, colon, voice box (larynx), esophagus, throat, and the liver. Excessive and repetitive drinking can also lead to immune system difficulties and abnormality to the fetus during pregnancy.

Excessive and Irresponsible Drinking Enfeebles the Problem Drinker’s Systems and Organs

What is more, if alcoholism continues over a period of years, the individual’s body organs will likely be affected in a negative manner. As an illustration, long-term, excessive drinking is especially injurious to the liver due to the fact that the liver does most of the work of processing the alcohol that has been consumed. Extreme amounts of alcohol kills liver cells and eradicates the ability of liver cells to regenerate. This medical condition leads to a progressive inflammatory disease of the liver that can sooner or later lead to cirrhosis of the liver, a grave and potentially fatal medical problem.Excessive, long-term drinking not only can result in acute liver damage, but it can also result in damage to the heart and to the brain. Physical damage this dangerous may be irreparable and may, in turn, lead to serious illness or premature death.

The Importance of Alcohol Counseling

It is imperative, as a result, to know how to recognize the different alcoholism symptoms and the "alcohol signs" so that the alcohol addicted person can be given the opportunity to get the quality alcohol counseling he or she requires.

Alcohol Dependency and Technologically Advanced Brain Research

Fortuitously, medical investigation is relentlessly generating original and significant information. Recent alcoholism exploration provides a good illustration. More correctly, for roughly the last ten years, complex brain-imaging scanning instruments have verified that repetitive and recurring excessive drinking transforms the configuration of the brain to a great extent, as a consequence resulting in brain disease that can last months, years, or perchance as long as the person lives.

More correctly, medical examination has revealed that people who have been drinking in a hazardous manner for a considerable length of time increase their risk for developing long-term and significant changes in the brain.

This type of damage may be indirectly associated with the drinker’s poor overall health or directly related to severe liver disease or to the alcohol’s effects on the brain.

Mental Disorders, Malnutrition, and Hazardous Drinking

As a final example of different medical problems that are to a large extent correlated to alcoholism, take into consideration the fact that according to scientific investigation, the abusive and repeated abuse of alcohol can result in erosive gastritis, a condition that lessens the absorption of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients.

This type of organ breakdown is linked to malnutrition and to an array of critical neurological and mental syndromes including memory loss, sleep disturbances, and psychosis such as Wernicke’s Encephalopathy and Korsakoff’s syndrome. This latter medical problem is an enduring incapacitating health problem that is epitomized by recurring learning and memory problems.

Conclusion

It is plain to see that repetitive, hazardous drinking is directly or indirectly linked to many dangerous medical conditions that can and do lead to serious diseases and premature death. Such information needs to be underlined and presented to everyone in our society so that a multitude of people will be able to refrain from excessive drinking while other individuals who have a drinking problem will get the quality treatment they need.

How do you identify the fact that you have a problem with your drinking? When is it apparent that you are engaging in alcohol abuse?

If you have ineffectively attempted to stop drinking or if you sworn to yourself that your drinking days are over and then you recognized that you were drinking in a hazardous way just a few days later, the probability is extremely good that you have drinking problems. The major point of emphasis is that if you have made an effort to terminate your drinking and cannot get this done, then your drinking is controlling you, instead of the other way around.

In much the same way, if it takes increasingly more amounts of alcohol to get the same “high,” you probably need to realize that you have a problem with your drinking.

You may be telling yourself that the justification for your drinking is so that you can reduce your nervousness or get rid of the sorrow that you feel. In much the same way, you may be trying to avoid a hurtful circumstance and may be looking for something better, more constructive, or less sorrowful.

As you keep on drinking, nevertheless, you will understand that drinking does not bring about the same high and you will also understand that drinking doesn’t help eliminate whatever triggered your misery in the first place.

As you continue to drink in an excessive manner, unfortunately, you may become addicted to alcohol and, as a result, you may add another key problem to deal with rather than learning about more efficient and wholesome ways of dealing with your alcohol produced difficulties.

When an Alcohol Evaluation is Required

If you have figured out that you have a problem with your drinking, possibly the best thing you can do for yourself is to call your medical doctor or healthcare practitioner and arrange for an appointment for a thorough physical and for an evaluation of your drinking behavior.

If you truly feel that you have a dangerous problem with your drinking, it might be a good idea to get prepared to hear that you need to get alcohol reahbilitation.

At this point, what are your choices? You can surely say no and refuse to see your physician and persist with your pattern of irresponsible drinking.

It really doesn’t take a rocket scientist, to the contrary, to comprehend that repeated, out-of-control drinking, if left untreated, will go downhill over time and in all probability bring about an early death. Consequently, your most positive choice is to face your drinking circumstance and obtain the alcohol therapy you require.

The Pretext of the Functioning Alcohol Dependent Person

It is ironic to note the fact that many alcohol dependent people lead busy and active lives and have vehicles, jobs, pets, houses, families, and any number of material possessions similar to people who are not addicted to alcohol.

Many of these “functional” alcohol addicted individuals may have never been arrested for a DWI and may have been fortunate enough to avoid all alcohol-related legal problems. Despite this good fortune, nevertheless, these alcohol addicted people need to drink in order to operate on a day to day basis while keeping their facade as they interact with the outside world.

Ask anyone who has seen them when they are bingeing or in a drunken stupor or ask a family member about the problem drinker’s alcoholism, nevertheless, and they will be quick to affirm the reality of the drinker's situation and the essentials about the alcohol addicted individual’s drinking circumstances and about his or her alcohol produced issues.

Why Do Alcoholics Fail to Deal With Their Drinking Problems?

As alcohol dependency research and statistics on alcohol abuse have underscored, no matter how obvious the alcohol induced predicaments seem to those who interact with the alcoholic, alcohol dependent people typically deny that drinking is the source of their alcohol generated predicaments. Not only this, but alcohol dependent individuals characteristically blame their alcohol-related difficulties on other individuals or upon other situations around them rather than seeing their part in the difficulty.

The root of the problem is that alcohol addiction is a disease of the brain. Once the problem drinker has become an alcoholic, he or she regularly resorts to denial, manipulation, and lying as a way of dealing with the fact that his or her drinking is out of control. And to make things more difficult, the experience of alcohol withdrawal symptoms regularly counteracts the alcohol addicted person’s rare attempts to suddenly stop drinking. As gloomy as the alcohol dependent person’s way of life is, then again, the positive news is that quality assistance is commonly available – if the alcoholic reaches out and seeks alcohol therapy.

Conclusion

Conceding the fact that drinking is eliciting problems in your day to day functioning is conceivably the simplest way to determine if you have a problem with your drinking. Stated more precisely, if your drinking is causing problems with your health, at work, in your relationships, with your finances, at school, or with the law, then you have a drinking problem that needs to be addressed.

If you have a drinking problem, additionally, this means that you are engaging in excessive drinking.

While some problem drinkers may be able to pinpoint their "alcohol signs," pinpoint their difficulties, and significantly reduce the amount and occurrence of their drinking, other individuals, nonetheless, need to tackle their drinking difficulties by getting professional alcoholism treatment. Moreover, due to their tendency to deny the facts and distort the truth, alcohol dependent people positively require proficient alcoholism therapy for their excessive drinking.

When I was in the tenth grade in high school, I registered for a substance abuse class. At that time period, I did not realize that alcohol abuse actually was a sub classification of drug abuse. While taking this class and learning more about drug and alcohol abuse and particularly about alcohol side effects, I read a lot about Alcoholic Anonymous, their meetings, how their programs have twelve steps, and how successful the Alcoholics Anonymous recovery program has been for people all over the world. I also learned a lot about alcohol treatment and the various alcohol rehab clinics that are usually available to alcohol abusers.

Dangerous Outcomes That are Associated With Alcohol Dependency and Alcohol Abuse

Some of the injurious effects associated with alcoholism and alcohol abuse that I learned about in this class certainly startled me. The ruined lives and frequent serious issues experienced by most alcohol addicted people made me feel like I never wanted to drink alcohol when I became old enough. In short, I did not want to face the disaster and ruination that alcohol addicted people almost always encounter.

Reflect on this for a moment. What fifteen-year-old individual wants to face premature death due to his or her drinking behavior? What teenager wants to become so out-of-control regarding his or her drinking that consuming alcohol becomes the object of one’s life? What adolescent wants to go to one of the local alcoholic rehabilitation centers to deal with alcohol-related problems before he or she becomes an adult?

What adolescent wants to deal with alcohol withdrawals when he or she tries to quit drinking? Why would a person engage in drinking to such an extent that it would cause serious issues in every area of his or her life? Drinking later in life after a person has a career, a family, and develops personal responsibilities makes sense. But why would a teenager want to sacrifice his or her education, employment, finances, and relationships for a life that revolves around hazardous drinking?

These issues were so noteworthy that I talked about some of them in class throughout the school year. What was totally incredible to me was the number of students who openly didn’t care about the detrimental outcomes of hazardous drinking that I discussed. It was almost as if they couldn’t care less about the truth and how these consequences can destroy their lives. For the first time in my life I started to comprehend a saying that my grandfather used to articulate all through my younger years: you can lead a horse to water but you can’t force it to drink.

It’s Liberating, Important, and Beneficial to Keep Away From the Damaging and Unhealthy Effects of Alcohol and Drug Abuse

And even at my young age, I also began to realize how beneficial, important, and energizing it is in life to keep yourself from the destructive and unhealthy consequences of alcohol and drug abuse.

Dante was a sixteen year old high school sophomore who was exhibiting quite a few alcohol-related problems at school. Therefore, the principal told him that he had to see Miss Johnson, the school counselor, before he would be allowed to come back to class.

Later that afternoon when Dante went home after school, he had to explain his school situation to his parents. His parents were “relatively traditional” and informed Dante that getting thrown out of school was not a viable educational option. They told Dante that failing to graduate from high school would likely be like a lead weight around his ankles that could probably impair his educational achievement for the remainder of his adult life. Moreover, Dante’s Mother and Father were quite disappointed that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his classmates in the second.

His parents informed Dante that even though he may be young, he needs to realize without much delay that drinking is the route to ill health, pain, failure, and financial problems.

It was obvious that his parents were 100% in agreement with Dante’s principal and explained to Dante that he had better make up his mind to see Miss Johnson, the school psychologist. After his talk with his Mom and Dad, Dante eventually agreed to see Miss Johnson the next day. So Dante called the school and scheduled an appointment to see Miss Johnson the next morning before school.

The Counselor Asks Dante if He Comprehends Why His Recent Alcohol-Related Activities Gave the School Administrators Room For Alarm

When Dante arrived at his scheduled appointment with Miss Johnson, she instantly reviewed all of the alcohol-related difficulties Dante had experienced and asked him if he understood why his recent alcohol-related actions gave the school administrators room for alarm.

Quite candidly, Dante was not sure why the principal explained to him that he had to see a school therapist. As he stated to Miss Johnson, why should he see a professional counselor about his drinking situation? Due to the fact that virtually all of his friends drink about as much as he does, in essence, drinking shouldn’t be such a big deal. Stated more explicitly, if almost everyone is drinking, why is this such a major problem?

Miss Johnson asked Dante when he started to drink alcoholic beverages. He said that some of his older classmates introduced him to drinking hard liquor when he was twelve or thirteen years old and getting ready to enter the seventh grade.

Miss Johnson informed Dante that while his classmates may in fact drink more than he does and that they may be an unhealthy influence on him, the facts are that he is the one who is getting removed from school due to alcohol-related delinquency, absenteeism, and fighting, not his buddies. Not only this but Miss Johnson also emphasized the fact that Dante, and not his pals, is the one who is failing and who is missing one day of class every week because of his alcohol related problems. Finally, Miss Johnson highlighted the fact that because of his drinking activities, Dante is getting into a dangerous cycle of alcohol abuse that can in time ruin his hopes, dreams and aspirations.

In a word, Dante’s involvement with youth alcohol abuse was starting to impede his ability to act like a responsible young man. As verbalized by Miss Johnson, “Just because most of your buddies drink beer, wine coolers, hard liquor, or wine does not mean that it is the healthiest thing in the world for you.”

Dante Learns That In the End He Must Be Accountable For Himself In Order to Prevent Destructive, Unhealthy, Dangerous, and Damaging Outcomes In the Foreseeable Future

Miss Johnson told Dante that one’s peers can undeniably influence a person in a negative manner, but that the individual herself or himself has to sooner or later be responsible for herself or himself in order to avoid destructive, unhealthy, damaging, and dangerous circumstances down the road.

Fortunately, Miss Johnson was well equipped for her scheduled time with Dante. She showed him reports and research studies she had underlined that listed various drinking statistics and facts that applied to most people in general. Then she showed Dante quite a bit of data that applied mainly to teenagers.

For example, Miss Johnson underscored the difference between alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse and explained to Dante that drinkers who continue to drink in an excessive manner more often than not become dependent on alcohol.

Miss Johnson also explained the concept of binge drinking which she defined as follows: drinking four or more drinks in one sitting for females and ingesting five or more drinks in one sitting for males.

The Counselor Articulates Quite a Few Alcohol Addiction and Alcohol Abuse Facts and Statistics

Then Miss Johnson articulated various alcohol facts and the following eight alcohol abuse statistics:

1. As shown in one study, roughly 11% of 8th-graders, 22% of 10th-graders, and 27% of 12th-graders articulated that they engaged in excessive drinking.

2. Between 48% and 64% of the individuals who expire in fires have blood alcohol levels showing intoxication.

3. Children who are drinking alcohol by 7th grade are more probable to report delinquent behavior, substance abuse, and academic problems in both high school and middle school.

4. In the United States, 25% of all emergency room admissions, 33% of all suicides, and more than 50% of all homicides and incidents of domestic violence are alcohol-related.

5. In the United States among drivers between the ages of 15 and 20, fatal accidents involving a single vehicle at night are three times more probable to be alcohol-related than to other fatal accidents.

6. In the United States, more than 40 percent of the individuals who start drinking before the age of 13 will develop alcohol addiction or alcohol abuse at some point in their lives.

7. In the United States, by the time they are high school seniors, 80% of teenagers have drank alcohol and 62% have been inebriated.

8. Treatment for alcohol dependency has been demonstrated to reduce criminal activity up to 80% among long-term offenders, has reduced their health care costs, decreased their homelessness, and increased their rate of employment.

Dante Receives A Meaningful Wake Up Call Concerning the Long Term and the Short Term Outcomes of Youth Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse

After Miss Johnson presented the aforementioned alcohol abuse and alcoholism statistics and facts, it was apparent that what Miss Johnson made known to Dante was a real source of revelation for him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only took the time to put in plain words the long term and the short term consequences of alcohol abuse and alcoholism, but she also took the time to substantiate what she was saying with alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency facts and statistics that related to everyone, and particularly to underage drinkers.

In actual fact, it was almost as if a light went on and Dante without pause realized why he should not be engaging in hazardous and excessive drinking with or without his buddies any longer. Dante thanked Miss Johnson for her concern and for the information she reviewed.

Miss Johnson then asked Dante how he felt about getting a physical exam and an alcohol assessment for the alcohol abuse or alcohol dependency treatment he would probably need.

Dante thought about this for few minutes and then agreed to get a thorough physical examination and to go through a thorough assessment of his drinking situation
so that he could start an alcohol abuse or alcoholism rehabilitation program in a reasonable time frame.
