Make a chart with the goals that everybody wants to acheive on it. Set goals that you can attain. A good challenge would be "To be able to do 1 mile a day, in 30 days". Start out with short distances and slowly work up.
If you are going to do a workout routine you can still pick out exercises that you would enjoy doing at first. Keep it easy to begin with and make it something the whole family can have fun doing. Even get some of the exercise programs that go with the video systems today. There are a variety of routines offered good for all age groups.
Plan a set time each day when you will exercise. At this time, do something, anything in fact: a walk, a workout or a swim. Stick to this schedule too. This will help in motivation believe it or not.
As your fitness improves, your motivation levels will increase too. Soon you and your family if they are involved will start having more energy. You might even build some muscles too!
